First Capital Republican Women
First Capital Republican Women was chartered in 2008 in Guthrie, the territorial and first state capital of Oklahoma. The city is nationally significant because of its collection of late 19th and early 20th century commercial architecture. The Guthrie Historic District is designated a National Historic Landmark.
First Capital’s programs are focused on issues and candidates. In presidential election years members organize, fund and staff the Republican Campaign Headquarters in Guthrie. In 2014 the club hosted four debates in public venues for candidates for local and state offices. The videotaped coverage was posted for many months at a local Internet news site.
Member Nelda Brown pieced the patriotic quilt pictured above and contributed it to FCRW as a fundraiser for the 2016 campaign office. The drawing for the quilt will be held this August at the state federation convention in Oklahoma City. The beautiful quilt is a hit!
While First Capital does not raise funds to give directly to candidates, the club supports all Republican candidates through “their phones and their pens,” footwork, and the campaign office. The organizing president has served as OFRW president, NFRW member-at-large and NFRW secretary, and two members have been NFRW Regents. Members participate in the annual OFRW Day at the Capitol and OFRW board meetings and conventions, and have participated in NFRW’s Legislative Day at the U.S. Capitol, regional meetings and conventions.
