Republican Women of Reno
Republican Women of Reno celebrated 65 years as a club in 2014, and as of 2015, we have been a member of the Federation for 65 years. We are the second-longest functioning club in the state of Nevada.
Over the years, this club has had many exceptional women leaders, including Barbara Vucanovich, who served as club president, state president, and ultimately U.S. Congresswoman for the newly-formed 2nd Congressional District from 1983 to 1997, and Heidi Smith, who served as club president and NFRW president.
RWR is seeing a vital growth in membership and is undertaking several projects to expand our outreach into the community, as well as to educate our members about the functions of government and our elected officials. We are especially proud that we have attracted many younger women to join our forces. We now have 78 members, and we are growing.
An important step in outreach to the community was to participate with a membership drive and voter registration booth in the Nevada Women’s Expo 2015 in Reno, with an attendance of more than 3,000 women. We invited the College Republicans to participate with us in our booth. We are actively contacting women who expressed an interest in RWR.
In the year 2014, our club programs featured candidate forums or debates, and our women had the opportunity to hear from 35 candidates in all in seven of our meetings. In 2015, our members will have the opportunity to hear from several of our newly-elected constitutional officers.
RWR participates in many other programs in conjunction with the four other Federated clubs in the Reno/Sparks area. Additionally, our club is represented in all state activities.
We are most proud of the many new club members who have been willing to assume the responsibilities that go along with taking an office or a chairmanship.
Our heritage is the basis for our dedication and for the rewards we enjoy.
-- Marian Bond, President
