Cajon Valley Republican Business Women Federated
In the Fall of 2014, our club discovered the East County Transitional Living Center, a homeless shelter in mid-town El Cajon.
When we took a tour of the facility, we were told the center's main goal is to eliminate homelessness. It houses nearly 40 families with approximately 70 children and also has a single men's and single women's section.
We were invited to the center's Christmas party and donated 40 handmade felt stockings filled with goodies for the children. We took one look at the faces of those children and knew we wanted to become more involved, so we met with the center's staff and proposed the idea of a "Bear Closet" where children can pick out a special bear while their parents are signing-in as residents.
The purpose of the special bear is to give these children a "warm fuzzy" when transitioning into a new environment. Each bear is given a special name and has a message attached as a bracelet. The message says: "You are Special, Love, Cajon Valley Republican Business Women Federated." The children love the bears. We believe that by giving them this small token, it makes their transition not quite so scary. They now have a warm, fuzzy bear to hug and love.
So far, thanks to our members and friends, 100 bears have been delivered to the center. Everyone needs a warm fuzzy, and our club gets one every time a bear is chosen.
