Education and Literacy

The NFRW Literacy Committee strives to sponsor and support a variety of programs, and we hope there is at least one to fit each NFRW club, regardless of club size or location. We sincerely believe in our motto – Readers Become Leaders.

Please contact any member of the NFRW Literacy Committee for additional information.

Abraham Lincoln   CELEBRATING THE LINCOLN BICENTENNIAL

During 2009, the Literacy Committee is honoring the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial. President Lincoln loved books and was a voracious reader, so it is very fitting that we join the celebration. The following materials are provided as resources to assist states, clubs and members in planning bicentennial activities. We encourage you to try one or all of the monthly activities. Be a part of celebrating the legacy of our great Republican President!

  NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND

The NFRW initiated this grassroots issue advocacy program in 2000 to raise awareness in America’s communities of the need for education reform.

  MY FAVORITE TEACHER AWARD

Established in 2001, this award recognizes excellence in teaching by honoring one of our nation's outstanding educators at the national biennial convention.

  MAMIE EISENHOWER LIBRARY PROJECT (MELP)

MELP is the NFRW’s oldest literacy program, celebrating more than 45 years of book donations from an approved list to schools and libraries. Bookplates are mailed to clubs upon receipt of the list of books to be donated. This enables the committee to track the numbers and names of books being donated by Republican women across the country.

BARBARA BUSH LITERACY PROGRAM - LITERACY MONTH

Each September, Republican women's clubs across the nation are asked to let us know what they do to promote literacy. All clubs returning the short literacy month form receive a signed certificate of participation and are entered in a random drawing for first and second prizes.

  ONE BOOK, ONE NFRW

Launched in 2005 in celebration of Barbara Bush's 80th birthday, this project is fashioned after programs in several cities which encourage every citizen in the community to read and discuss the same book.

GULF COAST SCHOOL LIBRARY RECOVERY INITIATIVE

Laura Bush's Foundation created the Gulf Coast School Library Recovery Initiative to rebuild school libraries in the hurricane devastated Gulf Coast. As soon as it was announced, the NFRW Literacy Committee endorsed it and encouraged members to become involved. For more information, visit www.laurabushfoundation.org.
