Launched in 2005 in celebration of Barbara Bush's 80th
birthday, the One Book,
One NFRW project encourages NFRW members across the country to read
and discuss the same book.
2009
| In
honor of the Lincoln Bicentennial, the 2009 selection is
"Lincoln’s Men: The President and His Private Secretaries," by
eminent Lincoln biographer Daniel Mark Epstein.
SYNOPSIS
"Lincoln’s Men" is the first narrative portrait of the three
young men who served as Lincoln’s secretaries during the Civil
War. John Nicolay and John Hay lived in the White House, across
the hall from the president’s office, and they and William
Stoddard spent more time with Lincoln than anyone else outside
his immediate family. An intimate and moving portrait of the
Civil War White House, Lincoln’s Men gives a vivid sense of what
it was like to work for America’s most brilliant president at
the pivotal moment in the country’s history. It is essential
reading for fans of American history. — Shawn Nicholls, Collins

2005
|
In honor
of her 80th birthday, Barbara Bush was asked to choose a book for
this program. Her selection was "Prince of Fire," by Daniel Silva
(Putnam, 2005). The NFRW Literacy Committee kicked off the project
with members and clubs sending birthday greetings to Mrs. Bush and
thanking her for selecting the book for us. Republican women enjoyed
the book in many ways. Several clubs hosted regular book
discussions, and one club in New Mexico taped a discussion of "Prince
of Fire" for their local cable television station. |
