'My American Hero' Essay Contest
In March, Lake Conroe Area Republican Women of Montgomery, Texas, was again honored to host the "My American Hero" essay contest.
Students from two school districts, including eleven schools, participated in this patriotic event. Third graders from Willis ISD and fifth graders from Montgomery ISD wrote essays about who they feel are their American heroes. LCARW had teams of members judge at each campus awarding 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place awards including 10 honorable mentions.
The top three winners from each school were invited along with their family members, teachers, and administrators, to our March General Meeting/luncheon honoring each winner. The winners read their essays, received cash prizes and goody bags from LCARW; elected officials presented the winners with certificates and flags flown over the State Capitol.
It was truly a special day where we saw a Veteran grandfather, teacher, war heroes, and immigrants who had recently earned their citizenship, being honored by these young authors.
The entire program depends on approximately 30-35 members volunteering to judge and organize the luncheon. It also serves as a source for engaging non-members to join our club.
