Club Gives the 'Pledge Challenge' to More Than 200 Children at County Fair
Wyandotte County Republican Women of Kansas hosted a booth at the county fair August 11-15. We introduced and supported local candidates. For our Americanism project, we passed out American flags and taught or recited the Pledge of Allegiance. By the end of the week, we had passed out 200 flags and had fun with over 200 children.
Several of the children said they do not recite the Pledge of Allegiance at their public schools. Children that attended private schools or were homeschooled were able to recite the pledge from memory and said they do the pledge every morning. A few children were so excited that they went to find their friends at the fair to bring them back to our booth to try the “Pledge Challenge.” Once they completed the challenge, they took their flag and chose a prize of patriotic rubber bracelets, glow stick bracelets or a lollipop.
At the end of our conversation, we also explained the difference between a constitutional republic and a democracy. As parents and citizens, it is important for us to hold our public schools responsible to teach our students civics, and for us to teach our children the Pledge of Allegiance and love for their country. It was encouraging to see the excitement of the children and their willingness to learn the Pledge of Allegiance.
