Club Plays Large Role in High School Awards Night

After months of hard work contacting sponsors, who were incredibly generous, the Constitution Essay Committee of Josephine County Republican Women, Oregon, attended the awards night for Grants Pass High School seniors. This was the second year the scholarships were given, and any senior girl attending classes in Josephine County was eligable.

The essay theme this year was:  Since the 1st Amendment of the U.S. Constitution states, "Congress shall make no law ... abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press," what is the effect of social media on our decision-making and our elections in the 21st Century? The committee worked untold hours, reading through the 24 essays that were submitted, ultimately choosing three for their awards of $5,000 for First Place, $4,000 for Second, and $3,000 for Third Place - awarding $12,000 in all.

The committee is focusing the next two years on giving pocket Constitutions to students in Josephine County. They are planning fundraising events to pay for club expenses and fund the purchase of the pocket Constitutions.
