Club Hosts Essay Contest Awards Luncheon
Lake Conroe Area Republican Women hosted its annual “My American Hero” Essay Contest Program on March 21. Winners from Willis ISD and Montgomery ISD were honored and given special recognition from area elected officials, including certificates from Congressman Morgan Luttrell, state Sen. Brandon Creighton, and state Rep. Will Metcalf. Texas Flags flown over the state Capitol were also presented to all 1st place winners by Rep. Metcalf.
Over 200 were in attendance for this great event which takes many volunteers and hours to accomplish.
Americanism Co-Chairs Nancy Oughton and Carlene Thomas reach out to principals of each school district the year prior to set dates for judging. Teachers submit essays and members of LCARW judge each of the 9 participating schools. Each school is awarded a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winner and 10 honorable mentions. The top three winners are then invited, along with their guests, to attend the luncheon.
Superintendents, teachers, parents, grandparents and sometimes the heroes themselves are treated to excerpts from the 2nd and 3rd place winners. The 1st place winners read their entire essays. These essays bring laughter, pride and even tears as they are read.
All 36 winners receive goody bags along with the certificates. Photos of each winner with their schools' representatives are then taken. Everyone leaves with a bit more pride and patriotism in their step.
