Former Mayor Speaks on Opioid Crisis
The Republican Women of Purpose of Memphis, Tennessee had as their guest speaker for their February 2019 meeting former Mayor of Shelby County Tennessee Mark Luttrell. He spoke about the opioid crisis. As everyone is aware, opioids are a crisis locally, as well as on the state and national levels. The opioid epidemic is the deadliest drug crisis in American history. Overdoses, fueled by opioids, are the leading cause of death for Americans under 50 years of age. The first wave began with increased prescribing of opioids in the 1990s. On average, opioids kill 130 people per day in the United States – over five people every hour. We must be vigilant and aware; many are unexpectedly impacted.
