Club Pledges to Support Keep Nine Amendment

Colonial Mount Vernon Republican Women of Alexandria, Virginia, hosted Roman Buhler, Director of the Madison Coalition and a national leader of the Keep Nine Amendment, at its June meeting.

The Keep Nine Amendment, which simply states, “The Supreme Court of the United States shall be composed of nine Justices,” would be an amendment to the U.S. Constitution capping the Supreme Court at nine justices. If this is approved by a two-thirds majority of Congress and ratified by three fourths of the state legislatures, the amendment would become the 28th amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

Democrats in recent years have been clamoring to increase the number of justices to the U.S. Supreme Court for reasons of “fairness,” but would use to advance their agenda through the courts what they can’t accomplish in the legislature. The Keep Nine Amendment would maintain the independence of the judiciary as well as the separation of powers among the three branches of government.

The Keep Nine Amendment has been introduced in the 118th Congress by Congressman Dusty Johnson with House Joint Resolution 8 (which has 132 co-sponsors) and by Senator Ted Cruz with Senate Joint Resolution 21 (which has 20 co-sponsors). It has been endorsed by former and current states attorneys general as well as state legislative leaders. It is also a top legislative priority of the National Federation of Republican Women.

Colonial Mount Vernon Republican Women members have been submitting letters to Virginia’s Governor Glenn Youngkin requesting his support for the Amendment. They are encouraged to contact their other elected representatives, discuss this issue with family and friends, write letters to the editor, and do whatever is necessary to make the Keep Nine Amendment a household word.
