I've said for a long time that everyone should be required to have some skin in the game - even if it's only a trivial amount. A national sales tax, if applied equally to everyone, would make sure that everyone contributes toward the tax base. I consider that a distinct advantage. But we would first have to make sure that other taxes are eliminated - even removing the constitutional amendment that authorizes the income tax. Otherwise, we'd find ourselves double-taxed.

I used to like the idea of a national sales tax after listening to Steve Forbes. However the first thing that will happen is the government will start making all kinds of exceptions for special interests. Property tax already directly effects homeowners, but I thought we ALL we're paying sales tax?

The Fair Tax was thoroughly researched years ago, with all the arguments addressed. I think this is a more fair way to generate revenue without picking winners and losers. As Jan Burch said, everyone needs to have skin in the game.

I would favor a flat tax rate for all incomes.

I was in favor until I heard it would be a sales tax of over 30 cents per dollar of the sale! In California we already have between 7 to 9 cents state and local sales taxes. I think it would spur a black market with people desperate to avoid the tax, especially on big-ticket items. Can you imagine paying more than 1/3rd more for a new car? Or large appliances? Yikes!

I say I'm not sure because of my mistrust of our government. We would not be able to "see the bill until they passed it so who knows what it might contain. Like the VAT tax in England, I imagine the increases would never stop.

Sales tax isa very fair and easy way to collect taxes. Those who can spend the most pay the most. It eliminates the constant cry of, tax the rich, because the rich are being fairly taxed. And the poor will pay based on their expenditures.

The current federal tax code is a disaster. States that have user taxes and not income tax have done better. There are other options like a flat tax. All other options need to be discussed and something actually doe and not just continue to push the problem down the road.
